The Pope remains stable, has no fever and has not needed non-invasive mechanical ventilation in recent hours, which means that he has overcome the last respiratory crisis of last Friday without direct consequences, said this Sunday Vatican sources.

“Today, too, the Holy Father’s clinical condition has remained stable. The Pope has not required non-invasive mechanical ventilation, but only supplemental high-flow oxygenation. He does not have a fever,” reads a statement released by the the Holy See Press Office.
Considering that the doctors at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he is hospitalized, had warned that it would take between 24 and 48 hours to know whether the crisis caused by bronchospasm (contraction of the bronchial tube) had led to a new infection, “the information does not suggest a continuation of the crisis,” sources emphasized.
“The signals from yesterday and today” do not suggest an ‘aspiration pneumonia,’ which was the greatest fear after the crisis, which caused a “sudden” worsening of his respiratory condition, was accompanied by a vomiting episode due to inhalation, which necessitated alternating oxygen therapy with non-invasive mechanical ventilation, which he no longer needed by this Sunday.
Francis, who has been hospitalized at Gemelli for 17 days, had already overcome another crisis on the 22nd, when he had to be supplied with oxygen due to a prolonged asthma attack, as well as requiring blood transfusions due to anemia, and for the first time since his admission, his condition was considered “critical.”
The Vatican also confirmed that “This morning, the Holy Father participated in Holy Mass, together with those who have been caring for him during these days of hospitalization. Afterward, he alternated rest with prayer.”
The complexity of the clinical picture, the prognosis remains reserved, while it is reported that there are no direct consequences of the isolated bronchospasm of last Friday, as the risk of a deterioration in the Pope’s condition remains.
This morning, Francisco received a visit, for the second time since his hospitalization, from two of his closest collaborators, the Vatican Secretary of State, Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Undersecretary of State, Venezuelan Edgar Peña Parra.
The Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, confirmed the visit, without providing further details about its content or duration, but the meeting already indicated that his recovery after the respiratory crisis on Friday was on the right track.
At noon today, for the third consecutive Sunday, the pope did not deliver the Angelus from the penultimate window of the third floor of the Apostolic Palace in St. Peter’s Square, where, despite everything, numerous faithful from different parts of the world gathered, many of them arriving in Rome for the Jubilee of “Hope” called by Francisco.
“I send you these thoughts still from the hospital, where as you know I have been for several days, accompanied by doctors and healthcare workers, to whom I thank for the care with which they look after me,” said Francisco.
