Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro led the commemoration ceremony on Tuesday for the 36th anniversary of the Anti-Imperialist Popular Rebellion of February 27, 1989, known as the “Caracazo.”
During his speech, the president recalled this historic event as a response by the Venezuelan people to “two centuries of plunder and betrayal,” emphasizing that this day marked the beginning of a great rebellion against the neoliberal model and economic colonialism.
“On February 27, 1989, Venezuela was the epicenter of the struggle against oligarchy and colonialism. Today, we have no hesitation in labeling that model as economic colonialism, which sought to subjugate our people,” President Maduro stated.

During his address, President Maduro condemned statements by opposition leader María Corina Machado, who labeled Venezuelan migrants as criminals and members of the defunct “Tren de Aragua” gang. “I say on behalf of the people: they are not criminals, they are not members of the ‘Tren de Aragua.’ They are economic migrants, a product of sanctions, they are good people,” the president asserted.
In another part of his speech, President Maduro reiterated Venezuela’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the United States government, though he warned that if the U.S. continues to “bet on fascism, violence, and sanctions,” it will bear the consequences. “If the Americans want to continue down that path, that’s their choice. We are willing to sit down and talk,” he declared.
A Call for Unity and Building the Future
