On Monday, October 21, Nicolás Maduro, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Luong Cuong, the newly elected President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, appointed by the National Assembly. Maduro emphasized the importance of enhancing and exchanging bilateral relations between the two nations.

“In the name of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, I extend my greetings and congratulate comrade Luong Cuong, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, on his election as President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” Maduro stated in a message published on Telegram.

Luong Cuong, previously a member of Vietnam’s Politburo, was elected as the new president with overwhelming support from the legislature during a session that was conducted behind closed doors. He took the oath of office in the same parliamentary session.

The presidency had been held since May by To Lam, former Minister of Public Security, who succeeded President Vo Van Thuong after his resignation in March amid unspecified allegations of irregularities.
