Just a few hours after his arrival in this Russian city, the Bolivarian leader met with Presidents Alexandr Lukashenko (Belarus), Mahmoud Abbas (Palestine), and Recep Tayyip Erdogan (Türkiye). He also had a meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
“I am very glad to have met you today. I have only seen you on television in recent years. You spoke of a future victory. If we look at it in global terms, you have already won more than once,” President Lukashenko said in support and appreciation for the Bolivarian leader.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Venezuelan president is scheduled to meet with the host of the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Yuri Ushakov, noted that Putin and Maduro will discuss bilateral issues and cooperation within the framework of BRICS. “There are a million issues” to address, Ushakov stated on the eve of the Russian-Venezuelan negotiations.
President Maduro landed on Tuesday at Kazan’s Tukai airport, days after the arrival in the Russian city of his Minister of Communication, Freddy Ñáñez, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, and Foreign Minister Yvan Gil.
The Bolivarian leader emphasized that the BRICS bloc—founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has become “the epicenter of the new multipolar world, the new geopolitics, the diplomacy of peace,” and a “hope” for countries in the Global South.
In April, Maduro expressed his desire to visit Russia, and the Kremlin confirmed that preparations for the trip had begun. However, the trip was postponed without a set date. He hopes that the Venezuelan participation in the Kazan summit will facilitate his country’s access to the BRICS as a member of the bloc. This possibility would allow the Bolivarian nation to integrate more intensively into the global economy and not depend on U.S. sanctions and blackmail.
