Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has strongly denied recent US government claims linking the defunct Tren de Aragua criminal group to an alleged plot to “invade the United States.” During an address in Caracas, Maduro dismissed these accusations as “fabricated lies,” asserting that the gang had been politically exploited by Venezuela’s opposition with international support.

Claims Against Opposition and Foreign Governments

President Maduro stated the Tren de Aragua “served the interests of the opposition that the US has supported in Venezuela.” He directly implicated former Colombian President Iván Duque, alleging, “Duque took criminal gangs from Venezuela to Colombia and spread them there.” The Venezuelan leader also accused opposition figure Leopoldo López and former lawmaker Gilber Caro of “directing Tren de Aragua’s operations,” claiming the FBI possesses recorded evidence.

Sovereignty Defense and US Criticism

“Venezuela is a free country; we are no one’s colony,” President Maduro declared firmly. While expressing openness to “cooperation and respect,” he condemned the US-led “campaign of aggression.” The president particularly denounced the treatment of Venezuelan migrants, alleging 238 are “missing” in the US and El Salvador—some detained in facilities he compared to “Nazi concentration camps.”

Legal Actions and Migrant Protection Pledge

Venezuelan lawyers have reportedly filed habeas corpus petitions in Salvadoran courts to protect detained migrants. “I will keep fighting to rescue and free all Venezuelans unjustly imprisoned,” President Maduro vowed, demanding the US respect migrants’ human rights and describing them as “good, noble people.”

Background of Rising Tensions

The remarks come amid escalating migration disputes, with the US using the defunct Tren de Aragua—dismantled in Venezuela—to justify mass deportations and pressure Latin American nations into stricter immigration policies.
