Through a phone call made on Tuesday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro congratulated Iran’s President-elect Masud Pezeshkian on his electoral victory and discussed the possibility of an upcoming meeting between the authorities of both countries.

“They expressed their willingness to continue working together to promote the long-term strategic relationship, committing to an upcoming high-level meeting and to continuing plans for shared cooperation and development,” the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said, adding that Maduro and Pezeshkian also reaffirmed the brotherly nature of the relationship between their countries.

Previously, on Saturday, Maduro had already congratulated the new Iranian leader, who achieved 53.6 percent of the votes, surpassing the conservative presidential candidate Saeed Jalili, who only obtained 44.3 percent of the votes.

On that occasion, the Venezuelan president expressed his desire to continue efforts to consolidate a multicentric and multipolar world, necessary to “continue defeating the hegemonic pretensions that threaten multilateralism and world peace.”

Iran has become one of the main allies of the Bolivarian revolution particularly since 2020, when the Maduro administration managed to overcome a gasoline shortage by purchasing Iranian fuels.
