The agreement was signed shortly after South Ossetia celebrated last year the 15th anniversary of Russian recognition of the territory’s independence, also recognized by Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Republic of Nauru and Syria.
The note issued in September by the Russian Duma or Chamber of Deputies states that Compliance with the agreement will allow to deepen technical-military cooperation in order to strengthen the defensive capacity of the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia.
President Putin then sent a bill to the lower house of the Russian parliament for ratification of the treaty signed in August 2023.
The document, similar to those signed with Belarus, Armenia or Kazakhstan, regulates the supply of weapons and military equipment, and will strengthen the Russian presence in the Caucasus.
Russia recognised the independence of both Georgian separatist regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, on 26 August 2008, two weeks after the agreement was signed to end the brief but bloody conflict with Georgia over control of South Ossetian territory, Known as the Five-Day War.
