They agreed to maintain regular contact on major issues of common concern.

On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump held their first technology talks on issues of mutual interest.

“I just spoke to Chairman Xi Jinping of China. The call was a very good one for both China and the U.S. It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately,” the Republican politician posted on social networks.

“We discussed balancing trade, fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!,” he added.

Previously, Trump’s future national security team was in contact with some Chinese authorities. This morning’s call occurred just hours after the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Vice President Han Zheng will attend Trump’s inauguration in place of Xi.

In November 2024, Xi sent Trump a congratulatory message after his presidential re-election. On that occasion, he assured Trump that the U.S. and China “win with cooperation and lose with confrontation,” adding that he hoped the two countries could find a way to “get along.”

Among the topics discussed in today’s telephone conversation, Trump cited the TikTok application, which in two days would be affected by a law that would prohibit app stores from offering it in the U.S., considering that the data of its users are then reported to the Chinese authorities.

The closure of TikTok will affect over 170 million Americans and will occur unless the Chinese company ByteDance gets rid of the platform. In fact, this morning the U.S. Supreme Court backed the viability of applying this law, asserting that allowing TikTok to continue operating in the U.S. could be a possible interference by the Chinese government.

However, Trump has expressed his support for TikTok, which raises questions about whether or not his administration will prosecute companies that violate the aforementioned law.
