Previously, 18 parties registered 30 pre-candidates for this democratic process.
On Sunday, 7,105 polling stations began serving about 2.7 million citizens who are eligible to participate in the primary elections through which the Uruguayan parties will choose their candidates for the October presidential elections.

Uruguay To Hold Primary Elections on Sunday
The voting centers will serve Uruguayans from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM. If the electoral authorities deem it necessary, the polling stations could remain open for an additional 60 minutes.
Citizens are not required to vote in the primary elections, which are being held in the middle of school vacations and during a period of low temperatures, two factors that could reduce the number of voters.
In these elections, parties present their pre-candidates, and the most voted politician from each organization becomes its candidate for the October presidential election. Previously, 18 parties registered 30 pre-candidates for the primary elections.
In the right-wing Colorado Party, six politicians are competing: Andres Ojeda, Gabriel Gurmendez, Tabare Viera, Robert Silva, Carolina Ache, and Zaida Gonzalez. The ruling National Party has five presidential pre-candidates: Alvaro Delgado, Laura Raffo, Jorge Gandini, Roxana Cobran, and Carlos Iafigliola.
The left-wing coalition led by the Broad Front has Yamandu Orsi, Carolina Cosse, and Andres Lima as pre-candidates. The Independent Party and the Open Cabildo, two organizations that support President Luis Lacalle’s administration, will each have one pre-candidate.
In this Sunday’s internal elections, all Uruguayan parties will also choose the members of their national and departmental deliberative bodies.
