The Puebla Group issued a strong statement this Wednesday rejecting the political and media persecution that has resurfaced in recent weeks against former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

This reaction follows the confirmation of the guilty verdict against her in the case known as Vialidad. The political alliance also expressed concern over the persecution faced by former President Alberto Fernández regarding the so-called “insurance case,” labeling both situations as a “new chapter of lawfare against Argentine progressivism.”

In their declaration, the Puebla Group criticized Judge Julián Ercolini, who is close to former President Mauricio Macri, for his conduct, which they claim aims to create an environment conducive to a preordained conviction.

The group argued that the judicial process against Fernández de Kirchner is riddled with irregularities, including judicial biases, media leaks, and attacks on the reputation of the former president and her family. They also highlighted the context of a lack of legal and constitutional guarantees surrounding this case, recalling the assassination attempt she suffered on September 1, 2022, in Buenos Aires.

The Puebla Group directed its message towards neofascist sectors in Argentina that they allege are behind this political strategy, linking them to a new radical right in Latin America and extremist politicians in Europe.

“As we did in the cases of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil, Evo Morales in Bolivia, and Rafael Correa in Ecuador, we will continue fighting against these attempts through the Latin American Council of Justice and Democracy (CLAJUD) and our political networks,” they asserted.

They concluded their statement by assuring that they “will not allow this dangerous attempt to politicize justice in Latin America to serve powerful economic and media interests” to succeed.
