The Puerto Rico Department of Health confirmed on Monday the first dengue-related death on the island since the start of 2025, marking a concerning milestone amid a significant increase in infections. To date, 849 dengue cases have been reported, surpassing the epidemic threshold and placing Puerto Rico under a public health alert.

The victim, an 85-year-old man from the Arecibo region, died in February due to complications from the dengue virus, as reported by Health Secretary Víctor Ramos.

This death underscores the severity of the outbreak, as 46.2% of the reported cases so far have required hospitalization, indicating a significant impact on public health.

The epidemiological report for week 07 of 2025 reveals that the most affected regions are Bayamón, Metro, and Arecibo, which have recorded the highest incidence rates.

The epidemiological curve shows that cases remain above historical levels, raising serious concerns about the healthcare system’s capacity to manage this growing crisis.

Additionally, the Department of Health clarified that another death, which occurred in January involving an 88-year-old man whose symptoms appeared in December, was counted for the previous year. This confirms that the death reported today is indeed the first dengue-related fatality of 2025.

The current situation demands a coordinated response from health authorities to contain the outbreak and protect the population, particularly the most vulnerable groups.
