European politicians are trembling over a conversation whose consequences could have a devastating effect on the EU.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held an extensive telephone conversation in which they discussed issues related to the normalization of their countries’ bilateral relations and, crucially, the outcome of the Ukrainian War.

White House adviser Dan Scavino said the Trump-Putin call was “still ongoing” an hour after it began. The conversation between the leaders of the countries with the largest nuclear arsenals is causing havoc in other regions. According to the German newspaper Bild, European politicians are “trembling” over a conversation whose potential consequences could have a “devastating” effect on the European Union.

“Kyiv fears that Donald Trump will agree to cede to Russia territories that Russian troops do not yet control. Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland fear a possible withdrawal of US troops from Europe,” the Russian newspaper RT reported.

European Commission spokesman Stefan De Keersmaecker said the EU hoped for a “just and lasting peace,” reiterating once again that Ukraine must be directly involved in peace negotiations.

“Bild also stressed that Paris and London were preparing for the worst possible scenario. Therefore, their plan to send peacekeepers is increasingly taking shape. If the US president ‘throws Ukraine under the bus,’ EU countries could intervene,” RT commented.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously clarified that the talks between the Russian and US presidents could last as long as the leaders deem necessary.

“We are pursuing the path of restoring bilateral relations and various forms of dialogue at different levels. This is an extremely important step that sets the tone for the rest of the movement,” he said.
