Attacks on Russian Territory To Take the Ukrainian Conflict to Global Dimensions: Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday the decision to start mass production of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile after its use in an attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
During a meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of Defense, Putin highlighted the success of tests carried out on this medium-range ballistic missile, which has nuclear capacity and can reach targets at long distances.
He expressed satisfaction with the results of the tests and stressed that the Oreshnik, which can fly at speeds of up to Mach 10 (approximately 2.5-3 km per second), will be a key component in Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces.
Putin clarified that this weapon is a precision weapon, not a weapon of mass destruction, and can be used in conjunction with other long-range systems that the country possesses.
The Russian leader emphasized that currently there are no means in the world capable of intercepting the Oreshnik and that its development and testing will continue even under combat conditions.
This decision comes against a backdrop of increasing threats from the West, making these weapons crucial to national security.
Putin also mentioned that work is underway to develop other short- and medium-range rockets, which will also be mass-produced after testing.
The recent use of the Oreshnik was a response to Ukrainian attacks with Western missiles authorized by countries such as the US, France, and the UK, which Russia considers a direct attack by these countries on its territory.
