In a recent meeting with employees of the Russian foundation Defenders of the Fatherland, President Vladimir Putin emphasized Russia’s firm position on the conflict in Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 24, 2022.
“We do not need anything that belongs to others, but we will not give up what is ours,” he stated, underscoring his country’s determination to protect its interests and national security.
Putin highlighted the importance of Russia choosing its own version of peace to ensure lasting stability for the nation. His remarks come amid escalating tensions, particularly regarding Ukraine’s actions and the eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Since the last round of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, which took place on March 29, 2022, in Istanbul, talks have been at a standstill. Despite this, Putin expressed his willingness to appoint representatives to engage in dialogue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, provided Zelensky shows interest in resuming negotiations.
However, the Russian president also noted that any attempt at negotiation at this time would be considered illegitimate due to a decree signed by Zelensky in October 2022, which prohibits talks with Russia.
According to Putin, it is the responsibility of the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s Parliament) to overturn this decree, given that Zelensky’s presidential term will end in May 2024.
Putin’s statements reflect an uncompromising stance and a lack of significant progress toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict, as the international community continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine with concern.
