Inumet said in a statement released on Sunday that a line of meteorological instability affects the country, generating strong and severe storms, and warned that in storm zones may be recorded heavy rains in short periods, falling hail, intense electrical activity and very strong winds.
Red Alert, the highest in the Uruguay’s emergency system scale, will run from 16:00 to 19:00 (22:00 GMT) and will cover the northern departments (provinces) of Artigas, Rivera and Salto, as well as some localities of Cerro Largo in the East, Paysandú, Northeast, and Tacuarembó, in the North-center of the country.
On the other hand, a strip of rain that crosses the centre of the country side by side and includes the entire departments of Durazno in the center and Treinta y Tres, east, as well as the localities of Cerro Largo, Flores, Florida, Lavalleja, Maldonado, Paysandú, Rio Negro, Tacuarembó and Rocha will remain under orange alert for heavy storms and heavy rain.
The country’s National Emergency System (SINAE) reiterated through its official channels the recommendations for these weather events, which include “move away from the coast and do not bathe in pools, beaches or rivers” and “avoid taking shelter under the trees”, as well as keeping informed with official sources and calling the emergency number 911 in case of emergencies.
