The Republic of Korea’s joint investigative unit on Monday requested an extension of the arrest warrant against deposed President Yoon Suk-yeol in connection with his brief imposition of martial law.

This request was filed with the Seoul West District Court, which had already issued an arrest warrant against Yoon on December 31.

The investigative unit, which includes the Office of Corruption Investigation for High-Ranking Officials (CIO), the National Investigation Bureau (NOI) of the National Police Agency, and the Ministry of Defense, issued a statement detailing the request.

This move comes after a failed attempt to arrest Yoon at his presidential residence on January 3, when investigators and police officers were prevented from executing the order by the presidential security service.

Yoon Suk-yeol, who faces charges of insurrection, was dismissed by the National Assembly on December 14 last year.

His case is currently under review by the Constitutional Court, which has a period of up to 180 days to deliberate, during which time his presidential powers are suspended.

The controversy revolves around Yoon’s declaration of martial law on the night of December 3, which was revoked a few hours later by the National Assembly.

The situation has created a tense climate in the country, where authorities are seeking to clarify the circumstances surrounding this serious decision by the former president.

The request for an extension of the arrest warrant reflects the growing pressure on Yoon and his administration amid a complex and polarized political context.

The continuation of the judicial process and the response of the Constitutional Court will be decisive for the political future of the former president and for institutional stability in South Korea.
