Rishi Sunak Resigns as UK Prime Minister After Election Defeat

In Thursday’s parliamentary election, Labor won 412 seats, achieving a majority that ended the Conservatives’ 14-year rule.
On Friday, conservative politician Rishi Sunak went to Buckingham Palace to formally present his resignation as prime minister to King Charles III.

This happened after leaving the residence at 10 Downing Street for the last time as head of the Government. Sunak left for Buckingham accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty.
The submission of resignation to King Charles III is part of British constitutional tradition and paved the way for Labor leader Keir Starmer to take over as Prime Minister.
After the hearing, the conservative politician will leave the palace through a back door, without being seen by the media, and it is estimated that he will return to his electoral constituency in northern England.
Vote counting for Thursday’s election remains ongoing. Out of 648 seats of the 650-seat parliament that have been won so far, Labour obtained 412 and the Conservatives 121. Labour’s parliamentary majority ended the Conservatives’ 14-year rule.
“I have given this job my all but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change and yours is the only judgment that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment. And I take responsibility for this loss” Sunak said in his farewell address outside 10 Downing Street.
“One of the most remarkable things about Britain is just how unremarkable it is that two generations after my grandparents came here with little, I could become prime minister,” said the former Prime Minister, who is a descendant of Indian citizens.
