Following this decision, a period of 24 hours is opened for the submission of appeals to the Constitutional Court, which has an additional 48 hours to issue a judgement. This means that the final decision could be made on Wednesday evening.

Georgescu won against all odds the first round of the Romanian presidential elections on 24 November, which were later annulled by the Constitutional Court due to indications of illegal financing and Russian interference.

“A direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide!” I have one more message: if democracy falls in Romania, the whole democratic world will fall! This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! “Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny,” wrote Călin Georgescu in an X post.

Georgescu declared, after submitting his candidacy, that on 6 December 2024 “democracy was murdered” and on 7 March the Romanian people resurrected, stating that he had submitted more than 320,000 signatures.

“Today I submitted my request. On December 6, 2024 democracy was assassinated and today, March 7, 2025, the Romanian people was resurrected. I submitted my candidacy on March 7, 2025, with more than 324,000 signatures, out of respect for the Romanian people who understood that they must defend their democracy. And free expression. “AUR and POT parties were on the side of the Romanian people,” said Călin Georgescu.

According to sources cited by the Romanian newspaper G4Media, the candidacy was rejected for both formal and substantive reasons. One of the determining factors was the property declaration submitted by Georgescu, which was inconsistent with the one he had filed in the November elections.

The ultra-nationalist candidate, who has advocated a rapprochement with Russia and questioned whether Ukraine was a state, defends reactionary ideology and in the past praised Romanian fascist leaders responsible for the Holocaust in the country during World War II.
