“We have signed a strategic memorandum to study the preparations for the supply of Russian gas to Iran,” the Russian company reported.

The memorandum was signed during the visit to the Islamic Republic by a delegation led by Gazprom President Alexei Miller, who met with Iran’s acting Prime Minister, Mohammad Mokhber.

The signing parties emphasized that the memorandum opens the doors to “mutually beneficial long-term cooperation.”

Miller also met with Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Oji, with whom he discussed the necessary steps to implement the memorandum and other aspects of energy cooperation between the two countries.

So far this year, the senior executives of the Russian company have made two visits to Iran, where Gazprom has a representative office.

As a result of U.S. sanctions, Moscow and Tehran have strengthened their ties in recent years. Russia seeks to help Iran break the U.S. blockade by joining international organizations such as BRICS or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

With the start of Russian gas supplies to Iran, Russia would acquire a new market that will allow it to mitigate the effects of the sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies following the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.
