Ukraine Attacked Compressor Station on Turkstream Pipeline

“One of the targets hit was the above-ground infrastructure of the largest underground gas storage facility in Stryi, located in the Lviv region,” the Russian Defense Ministry stated, adding that Kyiv’s provocations “will not go unanswered.”

The Russian military actions were in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory using ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles. They also responded to an attempted attack on the Russkaya compressor station in Gay-Kodzor, Krasnodar region, aimed at disrupting gas supplies via the Turkish Stream pipeline.

In operation since 2020, the Turkish Stream pipeline allows gas exports from Russia to Turkey through the Black Sea. The first of the pipeline’s two branches is designed to supply gas to Turkish consumers, while the second is intended to deliver gas to countries in southern and southeastern Europe.

On January 11, Ukrainian armed forces attempted a drone attack on the Russkaya compressor station. Although all the drones were shot down, debris caused minor damage to the station’s building and equipment. Currently, the compressor station is operating normally and supplying gas to Turkish Stream.

Peter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Foreign Affairs Minister, called the Ukrainian attack on the Turkish Stream pipeline an “attack on the sovereignty” of the countries relying on it. “We expect the safety and operability of this transport route to be respected by everyone,” he said.

On January 14, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on the incident, asserting that the attacks on his country’s energy infrastructure were authorized by Washington.

“I am convinced that the United States does not want competitors in any field, particularly in energy, where it unhesitatingly gives the green light to terrorist activities aimed at destroying the foundations of the European Union’s energy prosperity. They are encouraging their Ukrainian clients to shut down Turkish Stream, as they did with Nord Stream,” he emphasized.
