“The explosions at the Russian Consulate General in Marseille show all the signs of a terrorist attack,” she said, calling on French authorities to strengthen security at Russian diplomatic facilities.
The incident, which caused no material damage or injuries, occurred around 7:30 a.m. local time when two unidentified individuals threw two explosive devices at the consulate’s façade. One of the devices detonated, while the second was recovered and is now in the hands of authorities for analysis.
Near the consulate, police found a stolen vehicle and neutralized a suspicious container. Initially, a police source reported that Molotov cocktails had been thrown into the building’s garden, but this information was later dismissed.
Last week, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) warned that Ukraine might attempt to sabotage negotiations to resolve the conflict through terrorist attacks on Russian diplomatic missions, particularly in Germany, the Baltic states, Scandinavia, Slovakia, and Hungary.
The SVR also stated that such attacks would aim to discredit European Union members who maintain a critical stance on the conflict in Ukraine.
February 24 marks three years since the start of Russia’s Special Military Operation in Ukraine, placing the incident in Marseille within a context of growing tensions between Russia and the European Union, particularly following progress in negotiations between Moscow and Washington.
