‘The restrictions backfire on the interests of those countries that implement them,’ Peskov stated.

On Tuesday, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia firmly opposes the package of sanctions adopted recently by the European Union (EU) and considers them illegal.

“We are convinced that this is a double-edged sword and that in many ways these restrictions backfire on the interests of those countries that implement them,” he said, adding that Moscow has enough experience in mitigating the impact of such restrictions.

Previously, the Council of the European Union on Monday adopted the 14th package of economic and individual restrictive measures against Russia. These measures target high-value sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, finance and trade, making it more difficult to circumvent EU sanctions.

This round of sanctions includes restrictive measures against over 100 new individuals and entities, bringing the total number of sanctioned names on the blacklist to over 2,200. The list includes figures such as Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, as well as prominent pro-Kremlin businessmen, military personnel, and media figures.

Sanctioned entities include the Federal Financial Monitoring Service and companies in the military, defense, aviation, shipbuilding, machinery construction, telecommunications, media, armed forces, and the Wagner Group sectors.

On Monday, judges on the International Criminal Court (ICC) also issued arrest warrants for Russia’s former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and former Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov.

The arrest warrants were issued “in the context of the situation in Ukraine for alleged international crimes committed from at least 10 October 2022 until at least 9 March 2023,” said the ICC statement. The Russian Security Council, however, said that the ICC decision is void.

“This is shaking of the air, since the ICC jurisdiction does not extend to Russia, and was adopted as part of the West’s hybrid war against our country,” Sputnik cited the Security Council as saying.
