“According to the source in the Kremlin, Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow. Being guided by humanitarian considerations, Russia has granted asylum for them,” said the Russian news agency Tass.

The agency quoted a top Russian official, who said that “”Russia has always spoken in favor of a political settlement of the Syrian crisis,” and recalled to an immediate resume of the UN-mediated talks to be resumed.

According to Tass, the source said that the Russian government are in touch with the “representatives of armed Syrian opposition” and added that “opposition” leaders “have guaranteed security of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions on the Syrian territory.”

Hours earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry had reported that Al Assad “made a decision to leave the presidency and left the country” while Al Assad gave “instructions to carry out a transfer of power by peaceful means”.
