Russia Intensifies Fighting Against Ukrainian Troops in Kursk

This happens a day after the first contacts between Russia and the U.S. in search of a resolution to the Ukrainian conflict.
On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that its forces had intensified combat against Ukrainian troops that invaded the Kursk region in August 2024.

This announcement comes a day after the first contacts between Russia and the United States in search of a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
In the past 12 hours, Russian troops liberated the northern part of the town of Sverdlikovo and the road between Rylsk and Sudzha, the latter having been occupied by Ukrainian soldiers since last year. Russian soldiers had repelled two counterattacks by Ukrainian forces in Kursk.
“The enemy troops were defeated with tactical air force strikes and artillery fire,” the Russian Defense Ministry informed, citing the ‘South’ military group.
In recent days, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost over 510 soldiers. Since their operations began in Kursk, however, Russian soldiers have inflicted over 62,000 casualties on Ukraine.
“The Ukrainian units will be expelled from this territory, all of them. Those who are not expelled will be eliminated,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov assured this week.
On Wednesday, Kursk Governor Alexander Khinshtein reported that Ukraine continues to bomb the region’s electrical infrastructure using drones.
February 6 marked six months since the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk. Since then, Russian forces have managed to reclaim over 60% of the territory but have not been able to expel the enemy entirely.
Initially, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he would use Kursk as a “bargaining chip,” though he did not specify the intended purpose of such an exchange.
