Lavrov’s statements were made during the Second International Conference on Eurasian Security, held on 31 October and 1 November in the Belarusian capital, with representatives from 40 countries.
«The upcoming signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Russia and Iran will considerably strengthen Russian-Iranian relations», said the head of Russian diplomacy, according to Tass Agency.
«As I said, the treaty is being prepared for signature in the near future», he added.
The treaty, according to Lavrov, will define a commitment for closer cooperation between both nations in areas such as defense, and in the interest of peace and security, both regionally and globally.
The initialling of the agreement represents the culmination of a series of bilateral talks and meetings between the two countries, which have intensified in recent years.
It is worth noting that in October 2023, during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the agreement would be signed soon after a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian.
President Putin also accepted the proposal to sign a «Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty» between Russia and Iran, thus consolidating a strategic alliance that promises to have global repercussions.
The ties between Russia and Iran have been strengthened in recent years, driven by a common vision on economic, military and nuclear issues.
Both countries, subject to US sanctions, have found in their cooperation a strategy to counter international pressures.
