Russia is concerned about possible moves by Japan regarding its nuclear status, whether through joining U.S. nuclear missions, conducting multilateral exercises that involve allied strategic aircraft certified to carry out nuclear missions, or discussing the potential placement of U.S. intermediate-range missiles on Japanese territory.

“Tokyo should understand that any threats to Russia’s Far Eastern borders will be met with a response from Moscow aimed at strengthening security,” Rudenko pointed out.

Previously, Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Japan’s remilitarization efforts could destabilize the security of the Asia-Pacific region.

On Wednesday, Nikolai Patrushev, the Kremlin industrial development advisor, announced that Russia will strengthen its navy in response to growing threats from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“Russia must consider all aspects of geopolitical processes. Taking into account the growing threats against our state from the West, Russia is obliged to strengthen its Navy… It is necessary to guarantee the permanent capacity of the Navy to contain and prevent war conflicts, to defend our country with weapons in accordance with the norms of international law,” he said.

“The U.S. and other NATO countries are increasing the presence of their warships in the world’s main oceans, including areas surrounding Russian territory… The West sends its naval forces to raw material-producing regions, blocking sea routes, and searching and arresting merchant ships of any country, under the excuse of fighting piracy and terrorism,” Patrushev pointed out.
