The Russian Defense Ministry specified that its forces targeted the 179th joint training center, where specialists in communications and electronic warfare from all Ukrainian military units were being trained.

Located in the city of Poltava, this center was led by foreign instructors who were training Ukrainian soldiers “in attacks against civilian targets on the territory of the Russian Federation,” it added.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian State Emergency Service acknowledged that the Russian attack resulted in 53 deaths and 298 injuries. “It confirmed that 25 people have been pulled to safety, including 11 who were previously trapped under debris. Five more people may remain trapped as of 10:30 am on Sept. 4,” Rising Kashimir reported citing Ukrainian sources.

Although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that Russian missiles destroyed a “communications institute” in Poltava, he did not acknowledge that the facility had a military function.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry, whose high command has been criticized for concentrating such a large number of soldiers in a vulnerable location, has launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the massive attack.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned Kyiv of reprisals for the Ukrainian border incursion in the Kursk region, which marks one month this week.
