The Russian military command stated that the bombers were supported by Su-35S and Su-30SM fighter jets from the Russian Aerospace Forces. In some segments of the route, the strategic bombers were followed by fighter jets from foreign states.
“All flights of strategic aircraft are conducted in strict accordance with international regulations on the use of airspace over neutral waters, without violating the borders of other states,” Russian authorities recalled.
“Pilots of the strategic aviation force regularly carry out flights over neutral waters of the Arctic, the North Atlantic, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Pacific Ocean,” the added, noting that this mission took place just two days after two Tu-160 bombers conducted a patrol flight over the Arctic Ocean.
In December 2024, two Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers flew for more than fifteen hours over the waters of the Bering and Chukotka seas near the western coast of Alaska. Additionally, two other Tu-22M3 strategic bombers carried out a patrol mission lasting more than five hours over the waters of the Baltic Sea, escorted by Su-30SM and Su-27 aircraft.
Russian strategic aviation (Tu-160, Tu-95MS, and Tu-22M3) regularly patrols neutral waters of the Arctic, the North Atlantic, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Pacific Ocean, and other areas. These flights have not been interrupted by the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, France has scheduled a meeting in Paris on February 12 to discuss the war in Ukraine. Representatives from the United States and foreign ministers from several European countries have been invited to the event. Germany, Spain, Poland, Italy, and the European Union have already confirmed their participation. It is not yet known whether Russia and Ukraine will be present.
