“This afternoon, at the Urugwiro presidential palace, President Kagame received Huang Xia, special envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Great Lakes region,” announced the Rwandan presidency on its X social network account.

During the meeting, Kagame and Xia discussed the importance of supporting ongoing regional processes, such as the one in Luanda, led by the African Union (AU) or the one in Nairobi.

They also addressed the need to develop “coordinated, fact-based efforts” that address the “root causes of conflict and prioritize the achievement of lasting peace in the region”.

On the other hand, it is expected that this week Massad Boulos, newly appointed chief adviser for Africa to US President Donald Trump, will visit Kigali to address the conflict in eastern Congolese territory.

The conflict in eastern DRC escalated at the end of last January, when the M23 took Goma, capital of North Kivu, and Bukavu, capital of South Kivu, both bordering Rwanda and rich in minerals such as gold or coltan, for the technology industry and in mobile phone manufacturing.

Since the intensification of the M23 offensive, supported by Rwanda, according to the UN and countries such as the US, Germany and France, some 1.2 million people have been displaced in these two provinces, According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
