Tropical Storm Sara Leaves Four Dead Between Honduras and Nicaragua

Tropical Storm Sara left two dead and more than 120,000 affected in Honduras and two more in Nicaragua, after crossing northern Central America and weakening in southern Mexico, authorities reported on Monday.

After passing through Belize on Sunday, Sara was downgraded to a tropical depression and “dissipated” southwest of Campeche (Mexico), according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.

In Honduras, the most affected country in Central America, Sara left two dead, including a three-year-old child who was swept away by a river on Sunday, and 123,273 people affected.

More than 200 homes were destroyed and some 3,200 damaged, 1,794 communities were cut off by rising rivers, collapsed bridges and landslides on roads. There was also significant damage to agriculture, according to the Honduran civil protection agency, Copeco.

In the rest of Central America, in Nicaragua, Vice President Rosario Murillo reported, in addition to the two fatalities, 50 municipalities were affected, with 5,000 people affected and some 1,800 homes flooded due to the rise of 25 rivers.

Sara also affected Costa Rica, where the rains of the two weeks prior to the formation of Sara left at least six dead and four missing.

In Costa Rica there were more than 54 landslides, flooding in the provinces of Guanacaste (northeast) and in the south of the Pacific coast. Almost 5,000 people were treated by emergency services.

In Guatemala and El Salvador the damage was less.
