The official Saudi news agency SPA reported on Saturday the arrival in Riyadh of the Foreign Minister of the new Syrian administration, Asaad al-Shaibani, who was received at the international airport King Khaled by the deputy Foreign Minister of the Arab country, Walid bin Abdelkarim Al Juraiji.

Al Shaibani will participate in a number of meetings to which he has also been confirmed by the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Turkey or Germany as well as the US Under-Secretary of State, John Bass, or the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, among others.

The Saudi authorities have not yet provided details about the meeting, although Arab media indicated that it will address the challenges of the transition process of the new Syria without al-Assad, In addition to the lifting of sanctions imposed on the country by Washington and the EU since the beginning of the war in 2011.

For its part, the US State Department said in a statement that this “multilateral” meeting also aims to “coordinate international support for the Syrian people”.

These talks are an extension of those held in mid-December last year in the Jordanian town of Aqaba, where representatives from the US, France, Turkey and eight Arab countries, as well as the UN and the EU expressed their “unanimous” support for a “inclusive political process” in Syria.

Several Arab and Western countries have in recent weeks made initial contact with the new Syrian authorities and expressed their support for a peaceful and inclusive transition process, while also promising support to Syria in addressing the humanitarian crisis it is experiencing after 13 years of civil war.
