Senegal and its neighboring country Mauritania have officially become gas producers, utilizing the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field, which lies along the maritime border between the two nations. British company BP, one of the key players in this project, announced in a press statement that it has “started producing gas from the wells of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim field.”

Alongside BP, other stakeholders include U.S. group Kosmos Energy, Mauritania’s SMH, and Senegal’s Petrosen.

After six years of planning, the launch of this project has been hailed as “historic” by Senegal’s Oil Minister. The GTA field is expected to produce approximately 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually.

While Senegal may not reach production levels comparable to major global gas producers like Russia and Qatar, it aims to generate billions of dollars from this venture to help transform its economy.
