“Three drone strikes have been carried out this morning in the Katlang area of Mardan district, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province,” a security services source told the Spanish agency EFE, which requested not to be identified and which specified that at least ten members and their assistants were killed in the attacks.
Later today, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confirmed an “anti-terrorist operation” in the mountainous area of Katling, Mardan district, after reports indicated that drone strikes killed at least 11 people, including women and children.
The operation, carried out after a previous attack by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) that killed seven soldiers, targeted alleged TTP hideouts, according to a provincial government spokesman.
Several reports also indicate that the drone attack also resulted in the deaths of unarmed civilians who were near the site, including women and children, which has generated complaints from local residents.
Following reports of casualties, the TTP announced a three-day ceasefire on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, declaring that its fighters would refrain from operations during the last day of Ramadan, Eid and the following day, reserving the right to respond in self-defense if they are attacked.
This announcement comes after the TTP, which had announced a “spring offensive” and claimed responsibility for some 100 recent attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killed seven Pakistani soldiers in a confrontation.
Unverified images on social media show the transfer of bodies, allegedly victims of attacks against two families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, an area where the Pakistani Taliban operate.
So far, the Pakistani army has not issued a statement on this matter.
