The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, proposed this Sunday to the president of the United States, Donald Trump, a working table between both countries to jointly combat the fentanyl crisis in light of the imposition of tariffs on Mexican products.

In addition, she warned that if she doesn’t receive a response, on Monday she will announce the first Mexican measures in response to the tariffs imposed by Trump, which are 25% on products that Mexico exports to the United States.
This measure, Sheinbaum said, “has effects for both countries, but it has very serious effects on the economy of the United States. It will significantly increase the costs of all products exported from Mexico to the U.S.,” Sheinbaum said in a video on the social media platform X.
“Yesterday in my statement, I proposed to President Trump that we establish a working table with our best teams, those of security and also those of public health. Problems are not solved by imposing tariffs, but by talking and dialoguing,” she pointed out.
“I propose that we wait for President Trump’s response to our proposal, and tomorrow, Monday, at the presidential conference I will inform you of the first measures of what we call Plan B,” she stated.
The Mexican leader also noted that “Mexico does not want confrontation. We start from collaboration between neighboring countries. Mexico not only does not want fentanyl to reach the United States, but we do not want it to reach anywhere.”
For this reason, she pointed out, “if the United States wants to combat criminal groups and wants us to do it together, we must work in an integrated way, but always under principles, the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, collaboration, and above all, respect for sovereignty. Sovereignty is not negotiable. Coordination yes, subordination no.”
