In an act of political solidarity, various social movements in Brazil have called on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to recognize the recent electoral victory of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, who was re-elected by the people in the elections held on July 28.

In a letter to the Brazilian president, these organizations express their concern about the rise of extremist movements in the region and the need for a clear position from the Brazilian government.

The signatories of the letter include prominent groups such as the National Youth Movement, the Brazilian Press Association, the Brazilian Association of Lawyers for Democracy, and various unions representing workers, women, students, and communities of African descent and LGBTQ+ individuals.

The text reads:Through a letter sent to the president of #Brazil, Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, social movements request recognition by the government of the election of the dignitary of #Venezuela “

This broad coalition underscores the importance of unity and support for progressive governments in Latin America in the face of growing political polarization.

The letter also emphasizes that the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela has validated Maduro’s victory, which grants legitimacy to his term for six more years.

However, the political context is tense; sectors of the extreme right have denounced the election as fraudulent, arguing that the real winner was candidate Edmundo González.

Despite these accusations, the CNE confirmed the results, raising questions about the credibility of the criticism coming from these sectors.

The Brazilian government, although it has not aligned itself with the claims of fraud made by the Venezuelan opposition, has maintained a cautious stance and so far has not officially recognized Maduro’s triumph.

Given this situation, social movements are seeking to see Lula adopt a firmer stance in support of Venezuelan democracy and recognize the election results, which could have significant implications for relations between Brazil and Venezuela.

The group also notes that “recognizing (the election of President Nicolas Maduro) not only reaffirms our commitment to respect Venezuelan sovereignty but also strengthens the ties of friendship and cooperation that have historically united our two nations.”

The letter is presented as a call to action in a regional context where political tensions are palpable and highlights the need to strengthen cooperation among nations that share progressive ideals.

President Lula’s response will be closely watched both inside and outside Brazil, as it could influence the political future of Latin America as a whole.
