He is an emissary of Donald Trump’s neo-fascist, oligarchic, and imperialist government, they pointed out.

On Thursday, the Dominican Popular Movement (MPD), the United Left Movement (MIU), and dozens of progressive social and political organizations rejected the presence of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the Dominican Republic.

“We vehemently repudiate and reject the visit of Marco Rubio, an emissary of Donald Trump’s neo-fascist, oligarchic, and imperialist government, sent to impose his colonialist agenda on the servile government of Luis Abinader,” the organizations stated during a press conference.

“This interference seeks to strengthen extractivist policies that will deepen the plundering of our resources and turn our territory into a base for aggression against sister nations, perpetuating the Monroe Doctrine and the vision of Latin America as the backyard of the United States.”

“We denounce Washington’s blatant attempt to take control of the Panama Canal and its inhumane immigration policy, which deports people without legal guarantees, just as it already does in the inhumane prisons of Guantánamo, while pressuring submissive governments like that of El Salvador to imprison immigrants in subhuman conditions,” they emphasized.

“We demand absolute respect for our sovereignty… and compliance with international law. We condemn the inhumane practices against Dominicans abroad and the fascist repression against immigrants,” the Dominican activists pointed out.

On Thursday, Rubio was received by President Abinader at the National Palace, where the two discussed issues related to the crisis in Haiti, migration, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), for which Rubio has been appointed interim director.

They also addressed the upcoming Summit of the Americas, set to take place later this year in the Dominican Republic, as well as efforts to combat drug trafficking and strengthen bilateral relations.
