It is past time for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, UN Secretary Guterres said.

In his speech to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, observed annually on Nov. 29, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said resolving the Palestinian issue through resolutions of international legitimacy is the only way to de-escalate regional tensions and ensure peace.

Abbas reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, freedom, and independence on their ancestral land and their goal to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The president highlighted the ongoing Israeli occupation as the main obstacle to peace and stability in the Middle East, emphasizing that this occupation must end for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Abbas stressed the need for the international community to take decisive and substantial actions to achieve a just and comprehensive peace that aligns with international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.

It is past time for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of hostages, United Nations Secretary Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday, appealing for full support of humanitarian relief for the Palestinian people.

Deputy Secretary Amina Mohammed, on behalf of the UN Secretary, delivered this message at a United Nations special meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

“Every year on this day, the international community stands in solidarity for the dignity, rights, justice and self-determination of the Palestinian people. This year’s commemoration is especially painful as those fundamental goals are as distant as they have ever been,” Guterres said in the message.
