The incident, which occurred shortly after midnight, targeted an area near the site of a previous day’s suicide bombing where NISA (National Intelligence and Security Agency) troops were stationed.
The target of the attack the day before was a checkpoint in this metropolitan district attacked by a man at the wheel of a vehicle that the police were unable to stop despite their efforts to avoid the collision with the booth where they were on guard.
According to local reports, the mortars not only struck military targets but also landed in residential areas, leading to injuries among the civilian population. A local source has confirmed at least two injuries, though the full extent of the damage and casualties might be higher due to the scattered impact of the artillery.
The deadliest of the three was the one carried out against a restaurant in the capital’s coastal area in which 37 people died and more than 210 were injured.
The frequency and lethality of the attacks by the Islamist group, which is loyal to the Al Qaeda network, is seen as a response to the offensive by the army and security forces against it, which is sweeping across the country.
