Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said he has not yet decided whether he will seek re-election in 2026, emphasizing that his immediate focus remains on national security, economic reforms, and preparing Somalia for its first direct elections in decades.

Speaking to Kenya’s Nation Media Group, Mohamud highlighted improvements in security in Mogadishu and recent economic growth since he returned to power in 2022. His administration plans to hold local elections in June 2025, followed by national elections by September, shifting away from Somalia’s longstanding clan-based voting system.

However, opposition leaders, including officials from the autonomous regions of Puntland and Jubbaland, have expressed skepticism over the election timeline and raised concerns about potential constitutional violations.

Despite these challenges, Mohamud said his priority remains on delivering key reforms. He added that he would make a decision regarding a potential third-term run “at the appropriate time.”
