South Africa has dispatched a special envoy to meet with Mozambique’s outgoing president in an effort to quell the deadly protests that have erupted following the disputed election held in October. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed special envoy Sydney Mufamadi to express his government’s solidarity with Mozambique and its willingness to assist in resolving the ongoing crisis.

In response to concerns that the unrest could escalate further, South Africa has increased security measures along its border. The situation intensified after Mozambique’s Constitutional Council confirmed the victory of the ruling Frelimo party in the recent elections, leading to a new wave of protests across the country.

The main opposition candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, has rejected the election results, labeling them as rigged and urging his supporters to organize demonstrations. In various locations throughout Mozambique, buildings—including Frelimo offices and police stations—have been looted and set ablaze.

Amidst this instability, hundreds of detainees escaped from a high-security prison in Mozambique’s capital last week. The protests have resulted in dozens of fatalities since the elections, highlighting the escalating tensions within the nation.
