The Parliament of the Republic of Korea today filed a second motion to dismiss President Yoon Suk-yeol. This follows the rejection of a first motion last week amid growing discontent and polarization in South Korean politics.
During the 300-member plenary session of the National Assembly, the opposition decided to retry the dismissal of the president, who has been severely criticized after declaring a martial law emergency on December 3.
This statement, was repealed a few hours later by the same parliament. However, the implications of this action have led to questions about the legitimacy and political judgment of the president.
The South Korean constitution states that for a motion to dismiss to succeed, it requires at least two-thirds of the legislators in the National Assembly.
This means that the opposition bloc needs to gain the support of eight legislators from the ruling party in order to achieve the necessary majority.
This challenge is significant, given that the first motion was boycotted by most of the 108 members of the ruling party, reflecting the split and confrontation between different political sectors.
If this second motion is passed, the Constitutional Court would have a maximum of 180 days to deliberate on the dismissal.
During this time, the powers of President Yoon would be suspended, and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo would assume the position of interim president.
If the court confirms the dismissal, early elections would be called within 60 days.
