A court in South Korea has issued a historic arrest warrant for ousted president Yoon Suk Yeol, who faces serious charges of rebellion and abuse of power.

This decision marks an unprecedented event in the country’s constitutional history, as it is the first time that a warrant for arrest has been issued against a sitting president.

The Yonhap news agency reported that the court took this step following the impeachment trial that resulted in the suspension of Yoon’s powers on December 14.

The political crisis intensified when, on December 3, Yoon declared martial law in an attempt to avoid his dismissal, accusing the opposition of having ties to North Korea—a claim that was quickly dismissed by the opposition parties as “ridiculous.”

During this period, Yoon took drastic measures, closing Parliament, banning political activities, and subjecting the media to military control.

However, legislative resistance was effective, and the majority of deputies managed to gather in the National Assembly to vote for lifting martial law, forcing Yoon to accept the decision. Subsequently, on December 14, the Assembly approved his dismissal by an overwhelming majority of 204 votes to 85.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has thus taken office as interim president, but he is also facing impeachment.

Yoon Suk Yeol is being investigated for crimes including treason and rebellion, along with former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and other high military officials.

This development highlights the deep political crisis that South Korea is experiencing and raises questions about the future of leadership in the country, as well as institutional stability in a context marked by internal and external tensions.
