Sri Lanka: Elected President Dissolves the Country’s Parliament

The decision is taken on the second day of Dissanayake’s term, elected president with 42.31 percent of the vote on September 21.

The President of the Republic of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has decided to sign a decree that provides for the dissolution of the country’s parliament, while announcing an election period for next November.

«I, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, (…) dissolve the Parliament from midnight today (Tuesday) and convene a new parliament that will meet on November 21, 2024», underlines the decree, made public by the local newspaper Adaderana.

The standard date for new elections has been confirmed to be 14 November and the candidates participating in the election are from 4 to 11 October 2024.

This decision is taken on the second day of Dissanayake’s term, who won the presidency with 42.31 percent of the vote on 21 September.

The transfer of power was marked by the statements of the new president, who insisted that his presidential management will seek an improvement in the economic situation of the country, and that a “political revolution” It is necessary to move forward in order to solve the tense financial situation.

Dissanayake formed a government administration composed of its two parliamentary allies, who belong to the National People’s Power.

The Executive Officer will cover the areas of Defense, Finance, Energy and Agriculture. His first ally and newly appointed Prime Minister, Harina Amarasuriya, will be responsible for justice, education, trade and women’s affairs, while the other ally is MP Vijitha Herat, third member of the executive, and will remain at the forefront of Health, Religious Affairs, Transport, Public Security, Foreign Affairs, Environment and Urban Development.
