Strong 7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile’s Mining Region

The National Seismological Center reported that dozens of aftershocks have been recorded near San Pedro de Atacama.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (ESMC) reported that an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 shook on Friday Eve the region of Antofagasta, in northern Chile, where some of the largest copper mines in the world are located, if there were casualties or material damage.

According to the EMSC, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 128 kilometers. In addition, it was felt in regions of Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. The probability of damage in Chile is low.
The Chilean Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service and the United States Tsunami Warning System reported that there was no tidal hazard due to earthquakes.
According to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (senapred), the epicenter of the earthquake, which was recorded at 21:50 local time, was 24 kilometers south of San Pedro de Atacama.
Although no immediate damage was reported, Senapred reported in a statement that it was investigating «possible damage to people, alteration of basic services or infrastructure resulting from this earthquake».
«I have already contacted the delegate of the region and so far there are no reports of injuries or major damage, but the teams are gathering information», said Chilean President Gabriel Boric in his X account.
Residents of Sao Paulo, a Brazilian state at the other end of the South American continent, reported experiencing the quake.
The National Seismological Center of the University of Chile reported multiple aftershocks near San Pedro de Atacama, whose magnitudes have fluctuated between 3.1 and 4.8.
