Khartoum, Sudan – A series of airstrikes across Sudan’s capital on Monday and Tuesday have left at least 175 people dead and dozens more injured, highlighting the escalating violence in the ongoing 20-month conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The attacks, attributed to the RSF, mark a significant escalation in the conflict. The deadliest incident occurred on Monday, when an airstrike hit a busy market in Kabkabiya, 180km west of North Darfur. A rights group reported at least 100 civilians, including women and children, were killed in this single attack.
Further atrocities included a reported shelling of a passenger bus, resulting in the deaths of all 22 passengers. Ahmed Othman Hamza, Khartoum Governor, described the incident as a “massacre” perpetrated by the RSF. Separately, at least 65 people were killed and 100 injured in Omdurman, a region under army control, during an RSF incursion.
The violence on Tuesday constituted the most intense clashes of the year between the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
Sudan’s civil war, which erupted in 2023, pits the regular army against the RSF, a paramilitary force with origins in the notorious Janjaweed militia of Darfur. While precise figures remain elusive due to the ongoing conflict, estimates suggest at least 24,000 deaths and millions of displaced individuals. The conflict, despite its devastating scale, has received comparatively little international attention compared to other global conflicts.
