Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur over the past few days has caused hundreds of people to flee from the city of Al Fasher, the state capital.

The North Darfur State Emergency Chamber reported on Tuesday that “500 families fled from the city of Al Fasher to the Zamzam camp for displaced people”, in a new wave of displacement resulting from the fighting that has been raging in the city over the past four days.

While Al Fasher has been relatively calm during today’s day, last Monday several FAR shells hit neighborhoods and displaced camps that killed three people and injured nine, according to the Emergency Chamber.

According to their statement, families who have fled the city arrived at the camp and have already been admitted into temporary shelters.

The Emergency Chamber also noted that there are ongoing initiatives by local youth to help with the housing and reception of more fugitives, as well as providing humanitarian aid through relief associations in different areas.

He also called on national and international agencies to intervene and provide the necessary equipment to care for new displaced persons, as well as families already in the camps for a long time, in preparation for the coming winter.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), some 328 people were displaced from Al Fasher last July because of the fighting that started in May this year.
