The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Thursday that 124 people have been killed and 119,400 displaced from the area of AJ-Jazirah, in eastern Sudan, due to the increase in clashes between the Army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces over the past ten days.

«The armed attacks left at least 124 dead, including at least ten children, some as young as 10 years old, while at least 43 others were injured», said Catherine Russell, executive director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The United Nations also reported on serious human rights violations committed not only during the last day but throughout the Sudanese conflict.

Among the most persistent human rights violations, according to UNICEF and the Sudanese Ministry of Health, is sexual abuse. More than 27 women aged 6-60 years were reported to be abused.

OCHA also expressed concern about the Sudanese medical services, which are on the verge of collapse due to conflict and violence against health personnel.

International organizations and NGOs have also denounced the issue of displaced persons, which are estimated at more than 100,000 during the last weeks and more than 10 million in the last year of conflict.

Sudan faces the consequences of clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group. The battles have affected dozens of cities including the capital, Khartoum. According to press reports, bloody clashes occurred in North (West) Darfur, where both sides are accused of crimes which have been considered by OCHA as crimes against humanity.

According to the UN, Sudan has become the country with the largest internal displacement crisis in the world.
