Summit on Ukraine Shows Almost Zero Effectiveness: Russia

Many countries recognized that discussing peace without Russia’s presence has no practical effects.
On Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the Summit on Peace in Ukraine held in Switzerland over the weekend has proved to be largely ineffective.

“Of course, if we talk about the overall effectiveness of this meeting, then, of course, it tends to zero,” Peskov said, noting that many countries at the summit expressed the opinion that discussing Ukraine without Russia was futile, adding that this sentiment was widely shared among the participants.
On June 14, Russian President Putin presented a proposal for peace in Ukraine in which this European country is asked to withdraw its troops from Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia; recognize those regions and the Crimean peninsula as Russian territory; and give up their plans to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
If Ukraine accepts these conditions, Russia would immediately order the cessation of military actions and the start of peace negotiations. In addition, Putin’s proposal contemplates the lifting of all Western sanctions adopted against Russia.
“We will continue to work with all countries that are willing to do so. This is the position of our president. He remains open to dialogue,” said Peskov.
Despite the difficulties that Ukraine faces in emerging victorious from the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Western allies rejected Putin’s proposal, considering that its acceptance would be equivalent to Ukraine’s surrender.
The peace conference on Ukraine ended on Sunday in Burgenstock, Switzerland, with some attendees failing to sign the joint communique. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis acknowledged that most of the decisions made at this conference cannot be implemented without Russian participation.
