The South Korean Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that three senior military officers involved in the controversial declaration of martial law issued this week by Yoon Suk-yeol have been suspended from duty.

This decision comes against a backdrop of growing political tension and concerns within the opposition bloc about the possibility of a new declaration of martial law in the country.

The commanders involved include the chief of the capital defense command, the leader of the special army war command, and the commander of the counterintelligence command.

Following their suspension, these officers have been transferred to other units, although details of their new assignments have not been disclosed.

The situation escalated on Tuesday night when President Yoon Suk-yeol proclaimed emergency martial law in response to a series of civil disturbances.

However, the measure was revoked in the early hours of Wednesday following a vote against it in Parliament.

The repeal of martial law was approved during a cabinet meeting, where the legal and social implications of this statement were discussed.
