In that regard, the NHC expressed “This rain is likely to result in considerable flash floods that will threaten life, especially in the low areas of the island”.

On the other hand, authorities warned of the high probability that hurricane-force winds will persist until late this Saturday night, while tropical storm-force winds continue until Sunday.

The National Hurricane Center reported that there have been waves and guzzling currents on the east coast of the United States in recent hours, which could reach Canada during the course of the day.

The British Territory Electricity Company claimed that in the morning hours of this day more than three-quarters of its customers were without electricity.

According to media reports, the likelihood of a hurricane’s eye touching land in Bermuda is very low, as since 1850 only 11 out of 130 tropical storms that have reached less than 160 kilometres from the islands have touched land.

The Bermuda government ordered public transport to be shut down and the airport closed down on Friday, due to the arrival of tropical storm Ernesto.

Meanwhile, National Security Minister Michael Weeks stressed, Hurricane Ernesto is a serious threat to our community. It is not a storm to be taken lightly».

Ernesto is expected to be near the Canadian island of Newfoundland this Monday.
